The USA will never become self sufficient on oil production because that is one of the main engines of the Global Economy that ties the USA to the rest of the world. If the US stopped buying or trading oil for our excess agriculture products think about how that would change the price of farming and our whole economy.
The control structure, everything would change. We wouldn't have to cut our prices, and we would be in the driver's seat. What would happen to the rest of the world. It would be very devastating to their economies, I am sure.
It may be one of the only things, ensuring world peace. Who knows?
